International Training – Social Inclusion and Youth Participation in and through sport

In her last few weeks as a Young Officials Development Officer for Disability Sport Kat Southwell was selected to attend an International SET training programme in Iceland on ‘Social Inclusion and Youth Participation in and Through Large Scale Sport Festivals’. Kat said "Feeling very privileged I set off to Iceland to meet the 20 other participants, from 19 European countries, involved in the programme hosted by the Icelandic Youth Association (UMFI) and the International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA).

The training was delivered in Akureyri around ‘Landsmot’ an Icelandic Large Scale Sports Festival celebrating its 100 year anniversary. The programme was jammed packed with workshops, guest speakers and sharing good practice sessions demonstrating how large scale sport festivals can be used to overcome political, social and cultural barriers and used to promote social inclusion. Towards the end of the programme we were invited to attend the opening ceremony of Landsmot, seeing in practice the theories and ideas discussed throughout the week. Just before leaving Akureyri to travel across country to Reykjavik to catch the flight home, the President of Iceland asked to meet our group. It was incredible to hear how the country values sport as a tool to tackle many social and cultural issues.

Back in England I can now reflect and put into action; the experiences and knowledge gained from taking part in this training, the European networks that I have established and the inspiration gained from a great team of participants and facilitators.

Thanks both to UMFI and ISCA for this opportunity and for the Youth Sport Trust and English Federation of Disability Sport in allowing me time off in which to go."
