INNOVATION AND CROSS-SECTOR COOPERATION
MOVE2011 KICK-OFF STRESSES THE IMPORTANCE OF INNOVATION IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY OFFERS PROMOTED BY CROSS-SECTOR COOPERATION

In his welcome address the President of the French National Olympic and Sports Committee Mr. Denis Masseglia underlined the significance of grassroots sport for the global sport sector. "Popular sports, health sport and physical activity for well-being have today more than ever a role to play with regard to young people in general and populations with fewer opportunities in particular."

IT'S ALL ABOUT PARTICIPATION
Reversing the trends and tackling the challenges of physical inactivity

The first keynote address was delivered by Ms. Shellie Pfohl, Executive Director of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition (PCFSN), USA. The council has been recognized as a wonderful physical educator working with grassroots as much as national international sport stars. Ms. Pfohl stated that the widespread epidemic of obesity is today the fourth-leading risk factor for global mortality. The dramatic development within western societies requests resolute actions to achieve a turn-around in that statistic. "In the US population 1 in 3 kids and 2 in 3 adults are overweight or obese." Obesity and overweight produce immense health costs, economic costs and even severe costs in national security, as 70% of applicants do not pass the physical exam for the military, due to their physical condition.

Making the Canadians the most physical active people in the world
Inspiring address by Ms. Kelly Murumets

Second up was the President and CEO of ParticipAction, Ms. Kelly Murumets sharing her thoughts and experience in igniting a national movement for physical activity and sport in Canada. Kelly successfully ran a publicly traded Telecom entreprise in Canada and retired at an early age to run a not-for-profit organisation, namely PartipAction, to change the world and to take-up the fight against obesity and sedentary lifestyle.

Murumets' vision and ambition is to make the "Canadians the most physical active people in the world." She noted that "sport is a part of our culture and we need to get folks of the couch", through initiatives such as Canada's National Sports Day partnering with national CBC broadcasting channel, that united more than 1.28 million participating people in participating in physical activity.

Re-conquering the human senses

Mr. Eric Favey, Deputy Secretary General emphasized that "citizenship education is at the very core of our work at La Ligue de l’Enseignement as it is here were we build the turf of our collective playing field." Favey identified six drivers that advance the demand for a new societal contract as the structure of today's society is challenged by

# globalisation as a driver of cultural diversification

# the limitations of our world as a driver for sustainability

# the acceleration of knowledge as a driver for innovation

# inequality as a driver for societal disconnectivity

# individualization and autonomy as driver for choice and consumerism

# increased lifetime as a driver for demographic challenges

CLOSING DEBATE OF THE MOVE2011
new pathways to a healthy, active life?

The final debate of the MOVE 2011 World Congress on Sport for All discussed newpathways to a healthy, active life?

The panel identified two issues to be of defining nature to the future of physical activity and health initiatives around the globe, namely partnership and data. Sharing knowledge and resources through partnerships between NGOs, public institutions, and private businesses is the single most important feature of the solution. Ms. Lori Sloate from the WHO underlined that "as resources are scarce, but the mission and ambitions are converging, we need more pooling of resources in order to make a better use of the scarce financial resources."

Economics of prevention require data on how improved health condition will contribute to savings in the public budgets. Therefore, the sport and health sector need to provide hard fact and clear figures that demonstrate this correlation.
