Lisbon Treaty and Sport ISCA President Mogens Kirkeby welcomes the Lisbon Treaty mentioning a European dimension of sport through fairness, openness and cooperation.
Soft competences with strong inspirational impact. ISCA President Mogens Kirkeby comments the signification of the Lisbon Treaty for Sport-for-All. "The Lisbon treaty gives the Commission a better platform to promote and inspire member states to support its sports sector. Especially, the Sport for All sector and its organisations, which are depending on public support and back-up, can benefit from such international inspiration to reach a higher level.
I also believe the timing is quite fine. Even though many have been impatient, I believe that today, we have a higher level common understanding of the sport sector and its potential. Today, we have the White Paper on Sport emphasizing the societal role of sport and the grass-root sports potential of creating active citizens and using sport for improving health and social development. We have an action plan, which has gone beyond the debate on exemptions from EU legislation for the commercialised sport sector. This has unfortunately been the main debate for the last decade. Today we can speak about the specificity of grass-root sport and that has more positive influence on the European citizens and societies."
"In ISCA, we are very happy to see this development opportunity, and we will do our best to contribute to it" concludes Mogens Kirkeby.

Sports funding Australia independent review rejectes calls for a multi-million dollar boost for elite sports
The government-commissioned report rejected the Australian Olympic Commission's push for an extra 100 million dollars (93 million US) a year to attain its goal and said the money would be better spent on sports which were popular with the public. "The panel does not believe that the medal count is an appropriate measure of Australian performance or that top five is a sensible target," the report said. The review, led by businessman David Crawford, said that the funding imbalance between Olympic and non-Olympic sports needed to be examined, and more emphasis placed on those sports which were popular within the community. “For example, more government funds are provided for archery than cricket, which has more than 100 times the number of participants”, states Crawford. If Australia was interested in promoting health through sport, then money would be better spent on average participants than on “a small group of elite athletes who will perform at that level for just a few years.” Read more >>>.
