EC and IOC promise support ISCA president appreciates the IOC support for financial solidarity towards grass-roots sport
Following past Monday’s working meeting between European Commission representatives and IOC representatives with respect to the EU White Paper on Sport in Lausanne, ISCA President Mogens Kirkeby welcomes the recognition of special pressure on grassroots sports. “It is important and encouraging that the IOC stresses the need to safeguard the financial solidarity towards grass-roots sport. Grass-roots sport is under financial pressure and the combination of a global economic recession and an increased political focus on elite sport can have severe financial consequences for the Sport for All sector”.The financial imbalance between elite sport and grassroots sport and the economic pressure on grassroots sport were equally highlighted by the ISCA president during his speech at the European Sport Forum in Biarritz 26th of November. Excerpt from the article: “I appreciate the declaration of financial solidarity from the IOC to Commissioner Figel. It supports the idea of a balanced financial support between elite sport and grassroots sport. Such a balanced financial approach is badly needed, if we shall release the full potential of the grassroot sport sector in order to tackle some of the major societal challenges”,says Mogens Kirkeby Read more about this topic in the article “Sport for All under pressure from the Olympic Games”
