| PARTICIPANT PROFILE |
|
MOVE2011 addresses diverse target groups – from club coaches to medical doctors, from political decision makers to local activists, from private businesses to international institutions, from sport organisations to city administrators. The diversity of the attending stakeholders is one of the major strengths of the MOVE congresses and it will once again be crucial to the creation of a vibrant atmosphere at MOVE2011. Indeed, this diversity reflects the enormous potential for cooperation between stakeholders from grassroots sport and physical activity from both the public and the private sector, and we are convinced that the MOVE2011 congress will act as a catalyst for cooperation between these sectors. A joint effort to engage 100 million more people in physical activity also promises enormous societal benefits in terms of health and social cohesion, as well as a great economic opportunity to expand the markets of sporting goods and services to another 100 million people and beyond. MOVE2011 will provide a platform to attending stakeholders to discuss and align strategies in order to reap the full benefits of active societies. |

ISCA Europe Position Paper on 'Developing the European Dimension in Sport'
ISCA Europe Chair Filippo Fossati advocates clear priorities and goals in sport and physical activity for the benefit of the European citizens, giving health promotion, recreational and inclusion aspects the highest priority in future actions. ISCA EUROPE believes that article 165 TFEU provides ample political space for European citizens to benefit from higher ambitions in the field of sport and physical activity, than the ones outlined in the European Commission's Communication - Developing a European Dimension on Sport. ISCA EUROPE suggests clear and evidence based political goals, which raise the profile and recognition of sport and physical activity. Accordingly, ISCA EUROPE supports priorities which are in line with and contribute to the EU 2020 strategy towards smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, and promotes the common European vision of 100 million more EU citizens active in sport and physical activity by 2020. UN and IOC keeping myth alive Tight relations between the UN office for Sport, Development and Peace and the IOC keeps alive one of the oldest myth in sport – that big events are boosting sport participation
The second edition of the "International Forum on Sport, Peace and Development" jointly organized between UN office for Sport, Development and Peace (UNOSDP) and IOC hosted in UN head quarter illustrated tight relations between UNOSDP and the IOC. Unfortunately, it also became a platform to promote the old myth about big events being a “booster” of participation in sport. Physical inactivity is the fourth leading death risk according to the World Health Organisation and clearly one of the most effective health promoting tools in the hands of the sport sector is to increase participation in sport and physical activity. However, to be a serious stakeholder in health promotion, we have to build our propositions on evidence and there is no evidence that big events are very efficient in raising participation in sport and physical activity. “The sport organizations that work seriously with utilizing grassroots sport and physical activity in health promotion know that it is crucial to base our promises on evidence. Our partners in the health sector want facts and evidence not assumption and myths. It can consequently damage the recognition of the whole sport sector as a serious partner in promoting health, when such myths are conveyed by a high profiled institution as the UN office for Sport, Development and Peace”, says ISCA president Mogens Kirkeby. Public Hearing on Grassroot sports co-organized by ISCA Europe at the European Parliament
With the article 165 TFEU the European institutions have a framework to develop the “European Dimension on Sport”. Yet, the decisive question to be asked is if visionary political decisions, such as “100 million more Europeans active in sport and physical activity by 2020” will be prioritized or if politicians and the European Commission will be busy refereeing conflicts in elite sports. The priority of the grassroots sport was the topic of the public hearing “Grassroots sport and physical activity in Europe” held at the European Parliament 31 May. The event was hosted by MEP Emma McClarkin (ERC), supported by MEP Sean Kelly and co-organised by ISCA EUROPE. Both Emma McClarkin and Sean Kelly were among the five MEPs who launched the Written Declaration on increased European Union support to grassroots sport in September 2010 - a successful Written Declaration which reached the threshold of more than 50% of MEP’s signatures.
