By
16/05/2016

Between 23 and 29 May 2016, more than one million people from 35 countries around Europe are expected to be join in the 5th edition of MOVE Week, a pan-European event promoting grassroots sport and physical activity.

MOVE Week is an open platform for anyone with an interest in getting people active to showcase their activity or event to their community. Event organisers (MOVE Agents) are encouraged to register their events on the official website www.moveweek.eu, where the event tally for each country is being updated regularly. In 2015, MOVE Week recorded its best outreach so far covering 43 countries in Europe and Latin America with more than 11,500 events in over 2,100 cities (1,809 in Europe). In Europe more than 1.8 million physically active people registered to take part in MOVE Week events, and Latin America tallied over 1.5 million participants in 6,100 events. This year, the Latin American edition of the MOVE Week (Semana Muevela) will be held in November.

MOVE Week is the largest pan-European bottom-up community event of its kind promoting physical activity and grassroots sport for their societal and health-related positive effects. An initiative of the International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA) and the flagship event of ISCA’s award-winning NowWeMOVE campaign, it offers inclusive opportunities for citizens from various backgrounds and ages to be more active. They are invited to come, see and take part in numerous events such as open door or “try-it” days at local clubs, walking events, fun runs, bike tours, street sport events, school sports events, company activities and activities organised for hard-to-reach groups. MOVE Week’s slogan is Find Your MOVE, which aims to encourage people find the physical activity that appeals to them and that motivates them to be active more regularly.

The NowWeMOVE campaign’s vision is to get 100 million more Europeans active in sport or physical activity by 2020. Other activation events organised for the year-round NowWeMOVE calendar in 2016 include No Elevators Day (13 May) and four official events supporting the European Week of Sport: the Journey of Hope cross-border biking tour (July-September), European Fitness Day European School Sport Day and FlashMOVE (all in September).
